It's officially summer — and what better pastime than to sit back in a dark, cool theatre and relish a good old-fashioned murder mystery?

The Hollow takes place in post-World War II Britain, a nation under financial strain where even the wealthy are feeling the pinch. Against this backdrop, the Angkatell family gathers for a reunion; the perfect environment for power struggles, rekindled grudges, and secret dalliances that expose the ugly truth behind aristocratic grace. As each character desperately seeks validation, their clashing ambitions make everyone look capable of murder.

Christie's real subject, though, is the quiet desperation beneath comfort. Each character looks outward for what can only be found within: an actress who needs admiration to feel real, an heir who mistakes companionship for purpose, a matriarch so bored by her own life that she finds murder fascinating. They are all, in their own ways, hollow.

Christie never moralizes, and neither will we. But if this play leaves you with a question worth sitting with, let it be this: what does it cost a person to build a life around the pursuit of people, places or things? And when that life is threatened, what are we truly capable of?

Agatha Christie is synonymous with crime mysteries, and she is a masterclass in storytelling, so it’s no surprise that “The Hollow” is a theatrical experience rooted in a classic world we all can recognize, but that, in many ways, can feel foreign. In Dramaturgy, we consider all aspects of the text and the audience's experience, often drawing on research and historical context. In “The Hollow,” we enter an English Country estate overgrown with foliage and in decline due to the family’s post-WWII realities. Christie’s subtext is rich with engaging the hollowness of each character, and it all comes to a head when sudden death gives us a glimpse of life's frailty and how our present worries have no bearing in the end. Digging into the realities of this very specific world, this artistic team has taken it upon themselves to immerse themselves in this story and present it with authenticity, inviting us into a world that, ironically, is so alive with death.
