Eyal Weinberg is a historian of modern Latin America, with a focus on Brazil. His research explores histories of health, medicine, violence, and authoritarianism in the Cold War period.Ìý
Weinberg’s book, Tending to the Body Politic: Doctors, Medical Ethics, and State Repression in Cold War Brazil, will be published in 2027 with the University of Texas Press.Ìý The book tells the history of the Brazilian dictatorship (1964-1985) through the lens of health and medicine, exploring the role medical professionals played in both facilitating and contesting the dictatorship’s policies. More broadly, it is a study about the complicated relationships between professionals and authoritarian regimes.
Weinberg’s research has appeared in various academic and public history venues, among them The Americas, International Labor and Working-Class History, Estudios Interdisciplinarios de América Latina e el Caribe, and The Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Latin American History. He also served as the guest editor of a special issue of Estudios Interdisciplinarios de América Latina, focused on the new histories of health in modern Latin America.Ìý
At Â鶹ŮÀÉ, Weinberg coordinates the Study of the Americas Research Group, which promotes interdisciplinary and hemispheric research about the Americas across the College of Arts and Letters. Weinberg teaches a variety of courses on modern Latin America, with a focus on the histories of health and medicine and the Cold War period. Ìý
