Fraternity & Sorority Life
Academic Success Workshops

Academic Success workshops are coordinated in conjunction with the Faculty Fellow Program. They occur once a month and are related to general study skills, test taking skills and to serve the academic needs of students within the fraternity & sorority life community.

Academic Success - Faculty Fellow Program

The ultimate goal of the Faculty Fellow program is to support the academic needs of the student members of the Â鶹ŮÀÉ fraternity & sorority community. The Faculty Fellow is asked to assist us in the following manner:

Develop and implement Student Academic Success Sessions:

These monthly 90-minute sessions (3 each semester) focus on academic skill development for student members of the F/S community. Students will come together in this comfortable environment to learn how to help enhance their academic success through various facilitated discussion/presentations on various topics.

Serve on the Standards of Excellence Awards/Assessment Review Committee:

Standards of Excellence is the annual awards and assessment process for chapters within the Â鶹ŮÀÉ F/S community. Each chapter submits a packet of information detailing their work in eight core areas, one of which is Intellectual Growth & Genuine Learning. The Faculty Fellow will review these information packets to score chapters and provide scholarly feedback on how to enhance their organization efforts in this area. Discovering learning styles, thinking critically, reading to learn from textbooks, best practices in studying, compression, and memory, test & exam preparation, writing & speaking effectively, and developing research and information literacy skills.

Academic Success/Program Advisement

The Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life is committed to the academic mission of the institution and we will continue to offer innovative programs and services that support the academic needs of our students. The Faculty Fellow will be asked to provide feedback on creating new and enhancing existing academic initiatives within the f/s community.

New Member Institute

Fraternity & Sorority Life has created a New Member Institute, a program which includes a series of educational programs that focus on topics that are important to learn about as a new fraternity or sorority member, are relevant to the community and/or provide an opportunity for members to reflect on their current and upcoming experience in their organization and the Greek community. All new members are required to complete all components within the New Member Institute (NMI) program.

Being in a fraternity or sorority can be one of the most impactful experiences a college student can have – and the New Member Institute sessions are designed to help them make the most of it.

Hazing Prevention 101

In efforts to better educate our community and potential new members regarding hazing, Florida Atlantic along with the other State University System schools adopted an online hazing prevention program. Hazing Prevention 101 is a 60-minute online program that will help you recognize, prevent and report hazing. The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is requiring all members in the community to complete the program. The program only has to be taken once during a student's Â鶹ŮÀÉ undergraduate career. Upon completion of the program, a certificate is provided that should be retained and kept on file with the chapter. The office will not require copies of these certificates as we will automatically receive confirmation of completion of the program.

Starting in Fall 2015, all potential new members will be required to pass the program prior to seeking entrance into any chapter. The office will have the ability to verify if a potential new member has completed and passed the course or not. If you have any questions regarding the program or having issues signing in to take the program, please email the office at fslife@fau.edu and they will be able to assist you. We thank you all for helping keep Â鶹ŮÀÉ a safe environment for all our current members and future members. Always remember “Real Owls Don’t Haze!â€

Learn 2 Lead Institute

Learn 2 Lead Institute is a program held for emerging leaders in Fraternity and Sorority Life.

Learn 2 Lead is a one-day program designed for anyone who is interested in starting something extraordinary. It is geared toward emerging leaders in the F/S community. The first Learn 2 Lead institute held in Fall 2012 was adapted from the LeaderShape Catalyst program.

Participating in Learn 2 Lead is a first step in the life-long process of learning, exploration, and action.

The program is designed to allow participants the time and space to consider powerful questions that move them toward action. Compelling questions like: Am I on the right path? Who do I want to be? How can I connect with other like-minded individuals? This day may not provide participants the answers to these questions but rather create a community in which participants can engage in meaningful conversations with each. Throughout the day, participants will be identifying their strengths as well as the strengths of the members of their community. They will discuss how these contributions can move them into action. Since this an all f/s audience, the Â鶹ŮÀÉ Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life will be leading a conversation on using fraternal values as the foundation of action.

Here are additional details on the experience:

  • Registration must be done on-line, in advance of the program and in collaboration with your chapter since they will only have X amount of spots for this program.
  • Participants are expected to stay for the duration of the entire program (i.e. you cannot come and go, as you please).
  • There is no cost for chapters or participants.
  • All participants will be expected to adhere to a substance free commitment.

For more information regarding Learn 2 Lead contact fslife@fau.edu.

Hazing Prevention

Hazing prevention is something that Florida Atlantic values a great deal. Watch the video below to learn more about the educational resources that the University provides and what we are doing to ensure that REAL OWLS DON'T HAZE.

Hazing Prevention 101 CourseÌýHazing Prevention Week Â鶹ŮÀÉ Hazing Prevention and Education

Hazing is prohibited. No student organization, student club, including fraternity or sorority chapter, colony, or student member of such chapter or colony shall conduct, engage in, or condone hazing activities. This policy shall apply to acts conducted on or off campus whenever such acts are deemed to constitute Hazing.

Hazing includes, but is not limited to any action or situation that recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for purposes including, but not limited to, initiation or admission into or affiliation with any organization operating under the sanction of Â鶹ŮÀÉ. Additionally, Hazing includes pressuring or coercing the student into violating state or federal law, any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug, or other substance, or other forced physical activity that could adversely affect the physical health or safety of the student, and also includes any activity that would subject the student to extreme mental stress, such as sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct that could result in extreme embarrassment, or other forced activity that could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the student. Hazing does not include customary athletic events or other similar contests or competitions or any activity or conduct that furthers a legal and legitimate objective.

It is not a defense to a charge of hazing that:

  1. The consent of the victim had been obtained; or
  2. The conduct or activity was not part of an official organizational event or was not otherwise sanctioned or approved by the organization; or
  3. The conduct or activity was not done as a condition of membership to an organization

If you have been a victim or witness to hazing please feel free to contact the National Anti-Hazing Hotline, Toll-Free, at 1-888-NOT-HAZE ... all information will remain confidential.
