Less than 5% of nearly 4,000 universities in the country are designated as R1.
What is R1?
To qualify for R1 status from theÌý Ìýuniversities must meet stringentÌý Ìýsuch as the number of research doctorates awarded and total research expenditures. The Carnegie Classification was created by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education in 1970 to support its program of research and policy analysis. The organization updates its list of designated institutions every three years.
The R1 designation indicates a truly comprehensive university that spurs economic development, attracts high-quality students and faculty, and increases external funding. For Florida Atlantic, this designation is more than just a title; it serves as a powerful catalyst for transformation, opening doors to major donors and competitive research grants that can elevate our institution’s capabilities and reach.
