Academic Honesty Policy
Background and Purpose
Academic honesty is a fundamental principle of the College of Business at 麻豆女郎. An important function of any college is the creation and dissemination of knowledge. For this reason, we are especially sensitive to the protection and proper attribution of knowledge created by others. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated within the College of Business. It is the responsibility of faculty and students to adhere to the academic honesty policy at all times. 麻豆女郎 has an honor code requiring a faculty member, student, or staff member to notify an instructor when there is reason to believe an academic irregularity is occurring in a course. The instructor's duty is to pursue any reasonable allegation, taking action, as described below, where appropriate. In the event that the instructor takes no action or appears to disregard the allegation, the complainant may report the offense to the next higher level of authority. Under the provisions of the University honor code, witnesses must report any observed or suspected violations.
Definition
Academic honesty is defined to be the use of one's own intellectual effort at all times without misappropriating or representing as one's own the work of others. Examples of academic dishonesty include
- "cheating"
- the giving or receiving of help on assignments when the professor has prohibited outside assistance
- copying answers from another student or from a key or notes
- allowing another student to copy
- collaborating on assignments or exams except when expressly authorized
- unattributed copying, such as
- the use of purchased or borrowed papers
- the use of reference materials without citation
- plagiarism, which involves incorporating the work of others, either in whole or in part, into one's own work without proper citation. Plagiarism may involve the use of text or ideas or both.
Procedure for Enforcement
Academic dishonesty should first be reported to the instructor in whose class the alleged offense occurred. The instructor then must investigate the alleged offense and, notify the student in conference of the instructor's perception of the facts. If the instructor ascertains or believes that the allegation is factually supported, the instructor will mail or give to the student a brief written statement of the charges and the proposed disciplinary action. A copy of this statement shall be sent to the department head, who will notify the Office of the Registrar that an electronic notation of the irregularity should be attached to the student's transcript. The memorandum to the registrar should include complete information about the proposed penalty, including any determination about grades for the work in question and the course. This notification will block the student from withdrawing from the class unless the instructor permits it. If the charges are dropped in the appeal process, or if there is no second offense during the student's stay at the University, the notation will be expunged from the record upon written request from the student following graduation from, or two semesters of nonattendance at, the University. Penalty grades will not be changes unless the charges are dropped during appeal.
Disciplinary Action
Disciplinary action for violations of the academic honesty policy is a function of the gravity of the offense. Action taken may include any or all of the following:
- assignment of a failing grade on the work in question
- failing grade in the class
- suspension or dismissal from the College and/or the University.
Dismissal may be warranted even for a first offense if the violation is severe. Penalty grades cannot be removed by a drop or the forgiveness policy. When the department head notifies the Office of the Registrar of the irregularity, the registrar will inform the department head as to whether the student is a repeat offender. If the student is a repeat offender, a penalty of suspension or expulsion is mandatory.
Appeals Procedure
The student may appeal the proposed penalty by presenting a written request for appeal within ten days to the next level (Department Chair or Director, or to the Dean of the College if the Department Chair made the initial determination of academic dishonesty.) During the initial investigation and any subsequent appeal the student shall have the opportunity to present facts in his or her defense, and may have an advisor present for counsel if desired. The advisor may not answer in place of the student. The Department Chair's or Director's written statement of findings and action taken will be delivered to the student and the Dean of the College of Business. The student may appeal the actions of the initial appeal hearing to the College of Business Academic Petitions Committee. Requests for a hearing must be presented in writing within 10 days of receipt of the decision from the initial appeal hearing. The student may appeal the committee鈥檚 actions to the Provost or his designee by requesting a hearing within 10 days of the committee鈥檚 decision. These appeals are limited to the following basis:
- Failure to receive due process
- Arbitrary actions including lack of commensurateness of penalty to
- offense
- New pertinent information not available during earlier proceedings.
- The Provost may act on an appeal as follows:
- Dismiss the appeal and uphold the action taken by the college
- Order a new hearing by a different student/faculty council
- Reduce the severity of the penalty administered.
Records and Right to Counsel
Records of appeals and minutes will be maintained by the Dean鈥檚 Office. These hearings are considered to be educational activities. The strict rules of evidence do not apply. Students may be assisted by attorneys, but may not abdicate the responsibility to respond to charges to their legal advisors.
Academic Petition Process
The College of Business (COB) provides mechanisms for students to seek redress when a University academic regulation or policy causes undue hardship. The College may waive or alter an academic regulation when convinced a true hardship will exist if it does not take positive action. It generally considers hardship a situation that has occurred, or will occur, over which the petitioner has limited or no control. The College petitions process does not address cases of grievances with instructors or tuition matters.
The College has established specific rules concerning petitions for late withdrawals from courses and the waiver or alteration of University-level academic requirements beyond those of the College as follows:
- The student should petition in writing using a standardized petition form indicating what the student would like to happen. Attach a letter of explanation and accompanying supporting documentation as needed. The forms include instructions and what documentation is required for each type of petition. The petition and supporting documentation should be submitted to the Office of Student Academic Services.
- Petitions that deal with events in a given semester must be submitted by the end of the subsequent semester, excluding summer terms. For example, petitions for events occurring in a fall semester are to be submitted by the end of the spring semester. Petitions for events occurring in a spring or summer semester are to be submitted by the end of the following fall semester.
- A member of the petitions committee will approve or deny the petition within 10 business days. For each decision, a memo of explanation will be written.
- If a petition is denied and the student wishes to appeal, he or she must do so in writing within 30 days of receipt of the petition denial memo. The student should submit an appeal letter and provide reasons for the appeal. A College committee will review the student鈥檚 documentation and the memo regarding the original decision and uphold or overturn the decision within 30 days of the submission of the appeal.

Administrative Drops, Prerequisites and Student Responsibility
Students are responsible for completing prerequisites for courses and meeting all requirements for the degree. Any student who does not meet course prerequisites may be administratively dropped from courses at any time during a semester. Exceptions may be made by petition to the College before registering.
Students who do not attend the first class meeting of a College of Business course may be administratively dropped by the instructor.
College of Business Residency Requirements
- Students are required to earn at least 75 percent of their major courses at 麻豆女郎.
- A minimum of 30 upper division business credits must be taken at 麻豆女郎
- The last 30 upper-division credits must be earned at 麻豆女郎.

Email Correspondence
Official Communication with Students
Official university correspondence will be sent to either the student鈥檚 physical address on file with the Registrar or 麻豆女郎 email address if a current student. 麻豆女郎 uses electronic mail to provide official information to students. Examples include notices from the library, notices about academic standing, financial aid information, class materials, assignments, questions, and instructor feedback. Students are responsible for the content of university communication sent to their 麻豆女郎 e-mail account and are required to activate that account and check it regularly.
Limitation on Number of Withdrawals
麻豆女郎 Policy as per the University Catalog
Undergraduate students may not withdraw (with a grade of 鈥淲鈥 or 鈥淶R鈥) from more than two courses at the lower-division level (1000- and 2000-level courses) and from more than three courses at the upper-division or higher level (3000- and 4000-level courses; the limitation also applies to undergraduates taking graduate-level courses). 聽Zero- and one-credit courses are excluded from these limitations. Exceptional Circumstance Withdrawals, which carry the 鈥淲M鈥 grade, are excluded as well.

- Be aware of the limitation on repeated courses policy.
- Check with the financial aid office if you are a financial aid recipient to find out whether withdrawing will have an impact on your aid.
- Verify with your academic advisor whether withdrawing from the course will affect your planned registration for the upcoming term.
Withdrawal Limit Hold
If you see this hold on your account, speak to your advisor.
Limitation on Repeated Courses
麻豆女郎 Policy as per the University Catalog
No course may be repeated more than once, whether at 麻豆女郎 or at any other institution, without the permission of the student鈥檚 advising office: University Advising Services, in the case of students with 45 or fewer completed credit hours; the college advising office, for those students with greater than 45 completed credit hours; or the Honors College Academic Support Services office, for students at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College. To receive permission, the student must explain the reasons for the poor academic performance in past attempts and include a plan for success in the course on the next attempt. Those students who are requesting permission to enroll in the same mathematics course for the third time (or any subsequent attempt) may be required to first enroll in and successfully complete a math boot camp.
College of Business Policy
The College of Business strictly enforces the limitation on repeated courses policy. Students must pass required business coursework with a grade of 鈥淐鈥 or better within a maximum of two attempts. This includes pre-business courses and their pre-requisites as well as all courses required for the intended College of Business (COB) major.
FAQs
If the course is required for your current program, you would need to select a different major.
If the course is required for all business programs, you would need to select a major in a different 麻豆女郎 college.
- If you have attempted a course once at any of your previous institutions, you must pass at 麻豆女郎 on the first attempt with us (second overall).
- If you are currently enrolled in your second attempt of any required courses prior to starting at 麻豆女郎, your acceptance to 麻豆女郎 COB is contingent upon passing those courses in the current term. If you did not pass, you will need to change your major outside of business and update your first term schedule at 麻豆女郎.
- If you have completed two unsuccessful attempts in a course that is required for business, you would not be able to major in business at 麻豆女郎.
Regulation 4.001 Code of Academic Integrity
Students at 麻豆女郎 are expected to maintain the highest ethical standards. Dishonesty is considered a serious breach of these ethical standards, because it interferes with the University mission to provide a high quality education in which no student enjoys an unfair advantage over any other. Dishonesty is also destructive of the University community, which is grounded in a system of mutual trust and places high value on personal integrity and individual responsibility.
Regulation 4.002 Student Academic Grievance Procedures for Grade Reviews
Policy
Faculty has a fundamental right to assess student performance. Faculty will exercise professional judgment in determining how to assess student performance, based on standards in their departments or disciplines and on their own expectations for student achievement. A student may request a review of the final course grade, as described below, only when the student believes that one or more of the following conditions apply:
- There was a computational or recording error in grading.
- Non-academic criteria were applied in the grading process.
- There was a gross violation of the instructor鈥檚 own grading statement.
Students who falsify or misrepresent information during a grade review are subject to disciplinary action, as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. A grade will not be changed after graduation except in the case of a computational or recording error, subject to the reasonable discretion of the Provost (or designee).
Any time frames described below may be modified at the discretion of the University Provost (or designee). Should any deadline fall on a holiday or other day when the University is closed, the deadline will become the next business day.
Procedures
Step 1: Meeting with instructor
A student who believes that a grade has been assigned under one or more of the conditions above, may request in writing a meeting with the instructor; who will then explain how the grade was determined and attempt to resolve any disagreement. The student, whether still enrolled or not, must request the meeting by October 1, if the grade was granted in the previous spring or summer semester, or by February 1, for grades awarded in the previous fall semester.
Step 2: Conference with chair/director
A student who is unable to satisfactorily resolve the grade review through consultation with the instructor, or if the instructor is unable or refuses to meet with the student, may request a conference with the chair of the department or director of the school/program in which the course was taught. The written request must be presented by November 1, if the grade was granted in the previous spring or summer semester, or by March 1, for grades awarded in the previous fall semester. The request for a conference must include clear evidence that the grade assigned was based on a computational or recording error; that non-academic criteria were applied in the grading process; or that there was a gross violation of the instructor鈥檚 own grading statement. The instructor may participate in such conference. No other parties may be in attendance at the conference(s) with the chair/director. The chair/director will attempt to mediate the grade review, unless the chair/director determines that the review is without merit. The chair/director will provide the student, the instructor, and the dean of the college administering the course a summary of findings.
Step 3: Appeal to the dean
A student who is not satisfied with the results of the conference may appeal to the dean of the college administering the course. The written appeal must be received by the dean within five (5) business days of receipt of the chair/director鈥檚 findings. The dean (or designee) will review the written appeal, supporting evidence, and statements from the instructor and chair/director. Unless the dean (or designee) determines that the appeal is without merit, the dean (or designee) will convene a Faculty Committee (鈥淐ommittee鈥) within ten (10) business days of receipt of the student鈥檚 appeal. The Committee will be composed of the dean (or designee), who will serve as Committee chair, and three faculty members, at least two of whom must be from the department/school in which the course was taught. The Committee chair will direct the hearing and maintain the minutes and all records of the appeal hearing, which will not be transcribed or recorded. The hearing is an educational activity subject to student privacy laws/regulations, and the strict rules of evidence do not apply. The student and instructor may attend the meeting and present testimony and documents on their behalf. The student may choose to be accompanied by a single advisor, but the advisor may not speak at the hearing. Additional witnesses may be permitted to speak at the dean鈥檚 (or designee鈥檚) discretion and only if relevant and helpful to the Committee. The Committee will deliberate and prepare a summary of findings. The Committee chair will discuss the case with the instructor and inform the student in writing of Committee findings and the instructor鈥檚 response.
Step 4: Appeal to the provost (or designee)
A student who is not satisfied with the result of the appeal to the dean may request an appeal of the instructor鈥檚 action to the University Provost (or designee). The written appeal must include relevant supporting documentation. The appeal must be filed within five (5) business days of receipt of the dean鈥檚 (or designee鈥檚) notification. The University Provost (or designee) will determine that (a) no action is required; (b) the course and grade will be expunged from the record and the student鈥檚 fees for the course refunded; (c) the course and grade will be expunged and substituted with a new section of the same course with a grade determined by the Provost in consultation with the Faculty Committee and other experts in the field, as appropriate; or (d) the grade issue be returned to the Faculty Committee for reconsideration or clarification of findings. The Provost will notify the student, dean, and instructor in writing of any action. This decision by the Provost (or designee) constitutes final University action.
